About The Position

This position involves teaching undergraduate American Sign Language (ASL) courses in the evening school program at the Center for Language Studies. The role requires effective ASL instruction, student counseling, participation in professional development, and clear communication with university staff and students. The instructor will be responsible for developing course materials, setting up courses on the Learning Management System (LMS), and providing supplemental instruction to students.

Requirements

  • Sufficient proficiency in ASL to teach foundation and upper-division courses.
  • Evidence of proficiency for non-native signers of ASL may be required.
  • Ability to teach ASL effectively to English-speaking students.
  • Ability to counsel and motivate students regarding ASL learning.
  • Willingness to receive additional training and professional development in the field of ASL and language-learning pedagogy.
  • Working proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Ability to learn and successfully use Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU's Learning Suite.
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree by the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic degree in Deaf Studies, ASL, linguistics, and/or related.
  • Successful experience teaching ASL to speakers of English.
  • Knowledge of ASL-proficiency assessment criteria and the testing procedures needed to prepare and administer ASL tests and assign grades accurately and fairly.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one or more undergraduate ASL courses as assigned by the Center for Language Studies.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide supplemental instruction and guidance on course content.
  • Participate in professional development training workshops and respond to recommendations for improvement.
  • Write a course syllabus and set up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite platform.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Center for Language Studies.
  • Attend in-service training in AUG/SEP 2026.
