About The Position

Lenoir Community College is seeking an Adjunct Sociology Instructor to provide quality and engaging instruction to students through online courses. The instructor will be responsible for planning and organizing instruction, employing appropriate teaching strategies, and utilizing instructional technology to maximize student learning. This role also involves establishing clear learning objectives, evaluating student performance fairly, and maintaining accurate student records. The instructor must adhere to college policies and procedures, participate in college and divisional activities, and contribute to the growth and enhancement of the college's mission and programs. Responsibilities include preparing syllabi, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring timely grading and communication with students.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in sociology from an institution accredited by a federally recognized institutional accreditor or a master's degree and 18 graduate semester hours in sociology (courses designated as graduate-level sociology courses).
  • Demonstrate and maintain competence in mastery of subject matter, teaching performance, evaluation of student learning, support of college policies and procedures, participation in college activities, and contribution to college mission.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality and engaging instruction to LCC students through online courses.
  • Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning.
  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter.
  • Modify instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
  • Employ instructional technology, such as the Internet, when appropriate.
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills.
  • Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials.
  • Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives.
  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
  • Teach classes as assigned.
  • Ensure accessibility to colleagues and students for advisement and consultation.
  • Prepare syllabi for all assigned sections.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources.
  • Comply with responsibilities as cited in college documents.
  • Participate in meetings as required.
  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for information.
  • Support colleagues.
  • Contribute to program, department, and division curriculum development.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans.
  • Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College.
  • Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with college goals, mission, and plans.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate course-specific instruction.
  • Assist division leadership in updating course content.
  • Ensure contact information and other items are updated in the course each semester.
  • Utilize the current course shell created by the full-time Sociology Instructor.
  • Input notes and/or alerts in AVISO for students when necessary.
  • Ensure withdrawals are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Ensure assignments are graded within 1 week of due date.
  • Ensure response to student emails or phone calls within 48 hours (excluding weekends).
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by division leadership.
