About The Position

The Physics and Astronomy Department at Barnard College seeks a part-time instructor to teach an undergraduate course during the 2026-2027 academic year. The course is PHYS BC 1881 - PreHealth Physics I, a lecture course in introductory, calculus-based physics. Subjects covered include 1d & 2d Kinematics, Forces, Newton’s Laws, Energy, Momentum, Rotational Dynamics, Gravitation, and Oscillations. The instructor will cover relevant sections of chapters 1-16 of Halliday, Resnick, & Walker, Fundamental of Physics, 12th edition. The course is scheduled for Tuesday/Thursday 8:40-9:55am. Exact instructional assignments and other academic responsibilities are determined by the Chair or Director.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in a related discipline, with all requirements for the degree completed by the time of hiring offer.
  • A strong pedagogical sense and ability to teach Physics to Biology, Neuroscience, and Environmental Science majors on the trajectory to medical school.
  • 2 years of prior teaching experience.

  • Statement of interest (including teaching philosophy, most relevant prior teaching experience, advanced pedagogical or relevant training)

Responsibilities

  • Holding office hours weekly
  • Meeting with students as needed
  • Working with a TA
  • Grading exams and assigning final grades
