The Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science at Messiah University hires adjunct instructors on a per-load-unit basis for a given semester or term. Contracted responsibilities primarily involve delivering a course, including preparation, teaching, grading, mentoring or coaching, and office hours. Depending on departmental needs, a role may also include advising, course development, or other departmental responsibilities. The department includes majors in Applied Health Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Athletic Training, Sport Management, and Health and Physical Education, along with pathways to Messiah University graduate degrees in Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nutrition and Dietetics. It has ten full-time faculty and dedicated research and teaching laboratories. Adjunct instructors teach undergraduate courses as needed. Courses typically meet face to face for 2.5 hours per week over 15 weeks, in either three 50-minute lectures or two 75-minute lectures. Scheduling may be adjustable, but classes typically occur between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Responsibilities specific to the course or lab will be communicated individually. Messiah University selects educators for Christian commitment and proven teaching ability. Candidates should explain why diversity and inclusive excellence matter to them as persons of faith and in their profession, and how they would advance the university’s vision through teaching and learning, research, institutional service, and public engagement.
