About The Position

The Sustainable Product Design and Architecture Department at Keene State College is seeking qualified applicants for an adjunct faculty position to teach SPDI-304 Materials - A Life Cycle View. The course introduces students to material selection and materials behavior through a product life-cycle lens, including material families, material properties, processing, durability, environmental impacts, life-cycle thinking, and design-for-sustainability considerations that inform responsible product development. Successful applicants will have significant academic and/or industry experience in materials, engineering, sustainable product design, manufacturing, life-cycle assessment, or a closely related area. This is a part-time, non-benefitted position and is not considered essential staff for curtailment purposes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, product design, sustainability, industrial design, manufacturing, or a closely related field.
  • Academic and/or industry experience in materials, material selection, product development, sustainable design, manufacturing, or life-cycle thinking relevant to the course.
  • Ability to teach applied undergraduate coursework using discipline-appropriate examples, projects, and assessments.
  • Knowledge of material families, material properties, material selection methods, processing methods, and product life-cycle considerations.
  • Ability to connect material choices to product performance, sustainability, cost, manufacturing, and design constraints.
  • Ability to support safe, organized, and applied learning in classroom, studio, or lab settings as appropriate to course activities.
  • Ability to develop clear assignments, assessments, and feedback for undergraduate learners.
  • Strong communication, organization, student mentorship, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to use Canvas or other learning-management tools and common instructional technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or higher in materials science, engineering, sustainability, product design, manufacturing, or a closely related field.
  • Undergraduate teaching experience, especially in applied design, engineering, sustainability, manufacturing, or materials courses.
  • Professional experience with product development, material selection, design for sustainability, life-cycle assessment, or manufacturing.
  • Experience teaching in project-based, studio-based, or lab-based learning environments.
  • Experience using Canvas LMS.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver SPDI-304 course content consistent with program outcomes and approved course goals.
  • Lead class sessions, demonstrations, guided activities, critiques, labs, and applied material-selection and sustainability exercises.
  • Connect course content to product design, sustainability, manufacturing, and professional practice.
  • Prepare the syllabus, lesson plans, assignments, examples, and Canvas course materials.
  • Assess student learning, provide timely feedback, assign grades, and maintain appropriate course records.
  • Provide supplemental instruction, office-hour support, referrals to student support services, and mentorship related to applied product-development work.
  • Abide by USNH and KSC policies, including academic integrity, accessibility, safety, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with the department chair/program faculty as needed and participate in appropriate department/unit communications or meetings.
