About The Position

The Rosary College of Arts, Education & Sciences (RCAES) at Dominican University is seeking a part-time Adjunct Faculty Member to teach SOC 200: Writing in the Discipline. This intensive writing course is required of all sociology and criminology majors. It incorporates both academic and argumentative/persuasive writing in the social sciences to impart the basics of writing research papers and appropriate reference/citation style in preparation for the expectations of higher-level courses in the major. This course emphasizes critical writing, reading, and thinking, employing groundwork in theory, empirical data, and both primary and secondary research relating to the subject matter of sociology and criminology. The ideal candidate will be based in the Chicago metropolitan area to consult with students in person as a complement to this online course. The adjunct faculty member may work with the Sociology & Criminology Department chairperson and other senior faculty in the department to examine current teaching materials specific to this course.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in sociology, criminology, or a related social science; or ABD or a PhD with an emphasis in sociology, criminology or a related social science; or JD with an emphasis in criminal law or public interest law

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of demonstrated teaching experience
  • Experience with Canvas Learning Management system (preferred)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the university policies, procedures, and university calendar with respect to reporting information to university offices.
  • Administer student evaluations and submit the required paperwork related to instruction, including grades and course evaluations, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Grade weekly assignments, respond to student emails and phone calls promptly, and provide feedback in a timely manner.
  • Prepare course materials, including writing test questions and delivering assignments appropriate to the subject matter.
  • Hold office hours in person and/or via Zoom to support student learning.
  • Adhere to the goals and objectives of the course, as guided by the Department Chair.
