About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach in-person sections of PHI 100 Mythology and/or PHI 101 Introduction to Philosophy for the Fall 2026 semester. The PHI 100 Mythology course explores myths across cultures, examining their meaning, ways of knowing, and what they reveal about ourselves, others, and the natural world. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 9:15 am on campus. The PHI 101 Introduction to Philosophy course delves into central debates in Western philosophy, including existence, science, the mind-body problem, ethics, aesthetics, and the meaning of life, through readings of classical texts and argumentation. It meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:30 pm to 1:20 pm on campus. Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing a quality learning experience, distributing and reviewing the course syllabus, utilizing active learning methods, staying current in their field, arranging for necessary materials, accurately recording student data, and supporting students' learning goals by focusing on outcomes, considering student needs, familiarizing themselves with support services, accommodating differences, maintaining academic integrity, and being available to students. They are also expected to attend all scheduled classes and follow procedures for absences. Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Philosophy or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide a quality learning experience for students on a semester basis.
  • Report to a dean and perform instruction-related duties in a timely manner.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forward a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data, including assessment of student performance and final grade reports.
  • Be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account student needs and abilities, becoming familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining academic integrity, and making himself/herself available to assist students.
  • Recommend campus services to students as needed (e.g., library services, financial aid, counseling, supplemental instruction).
  • Attend all scheduled classes.
  • Follow appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or designee and providing an alternate assignment if a class must be missed.
