About The Position

Holyoke Community College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach a section of ANT 101: Cultural Anthropology in Fall 2026. The course provides an introduction to the field, emphasizing the similarities and differences among societies with diverse economic, social, political, and religious traditions. It involves detailed study of societies with cultures different from our own, covering theories about social structure and culture, anthropological research methods, and the ethics of anthropological research and applied anthropology. Adjunct faculty are responsible for delivering a quality learning experience, distributing and reviewing the course syllabus, utilizing active learning methods and varied instructional strategies, staying current with developments in their professional content area, arranging for necessary materials and equipment, and accurately recording and reporting student data. They are also expected to be supportive of students' learning goals, make reasonable provisions for individual differences, maintain academic integrity, and make themselves available to assist students. Faculty members should be aware of and recommend campus services to students as needed and attend all scheduled classes, following appropriate procedures if a class must be missed.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology or related area
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred)
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Provide a quality learning experience for Holyoke Community College students on a semester basis.
  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Forward a course syllabus to the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes.
  • Utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course.
  • Remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in his/her professional content area(s).
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area dean.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data including assessment of student performance; including final grade reports.
  • Be supportive of students' learning goals by focusing on student learning outcomes, taking into account the needs and abilities of the students, becoming familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining the academic integrity of the college, and making himself/herself available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.
  • Recommend campus services to students as needed.
  • Attend all scheduled classes.
  • Follow appropriate procedures by notifying the supervisor or the supervisor's designee and is responsible by providing an alternate assignment if it is necessary to miss a class.
