About The Position

Adjunct Instructor positions are temporary, part-time positions hired on an as-needed basis to support workforce and skills training initiatives. The Adjunct CNC Machining & Programming Instructor will create a hands-on learning environment that supports adult learners in developing practical machining, CNC operation, setup, programming, and troubleshooting skills aligned with modern manufacturing needs. This role focuses on delivering non-credit CNC machining and programming training for workforce development. Training may range from introductory machining and CNC operation to advanced setup and programming based on instructor expertise and employer needs. Instructors may teach at Ivy Tech Community College - Richmond or onsite at employer locations throughout the surrounding service area. Applicants are not required to have expertise in every CNC machine, controller, or programming platform. Instructors may be selected to teach courses within their specific area(s) of professional expertise.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant hands-on CNC machining, CNC programming, tool and die, manufacturing, or related technical experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in at least one CNC machining or programming discipline.
• Working knowledge of CNC machine operation, setup, tooling, machining processes, and applicable safety practices.
• Ability to explain technical machining concepts clearly and translate industry experience into practical, hands-on instruction.
• Ability to effectively work with adult learners with varying levels of machining experience.
• Ability to demonstrate proper machine setup, operation, programming, inspection, and/or troubleshooting techniques within the instructor's area of expertise.
• High school diploma or equivalent with substantial relevant industry experience required.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's degree or higher in Machine Tool Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, CNC Technology, or a related field.
• Previous experience as a CNC machinist, CNC programmer, manufacturing technician, toolmaker, manufacturing engineer, machining supervisor, or similar role.
• Experience programming CNC mills and/or lathes.
• Experience with FANUC, Haas, or other commonly used CNC controls.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam or similar platforms.
• Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, GD&T;, precision measurement, and inspection techniques.
• Prior teaching, technical training, apprenticeship, mentoring, or workforce-development experience.
• Industry-recognized machining or manufacturing credentials.
• Experience developing or delivering customized employer-based technical training.
• Experience troubleshooting CNC equipment, programs, tooling, and machining processes in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality, hands-on CNC machining and programming training in classroom, lab, and employer-site settings.
• Facilitate adult learning through machine demonstrations, setup exercises, programming activities, troubleshooting scenarios, and practical applications.
• Provide or assist with course outlines, instructional materials, lab activities, and assessments aligned with workforce training objectives.
• Demonstrate safe and proper operation of CNC machines, tooling, workholding devices, and related equipment.
• Adapt instruction to participants with varying levels of machining and manufacturing experience.
• Maintain accurate attendance, progress, assessment, and course-completion records.
• Submit required course documentation within established timelines.
• Support participants with technical questions and skill development throughout training.
• Address participant concerns and collaborate with Ivy Tech Workforce/Skills Training staff as needed.
• Meet all scheduled training sessions as assigned.
• Utilize instructional technologies such as PowerPoint, Canvas, CNC simulation software, CAD/CAM software, or manufacturer-specific programming platforms when appropriate.
• Promote a professional, respectful, inclusive, and safety-focused learning environment.
• Ensure the safe use of machines, tooling, measuring equipment, and laboratory resources.
