Adjunct, Chemistry and Biochemistry
About The Position
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elmhurst University seeks part-time adjunct faculty to begin in February 2027. Courses may include lectures and/or laboratories in general chemistry for majors, general or organic and biochemistry for pre-nursing majors, or general education courses. Depending on the candidate’s training, organic chemistry laboratories for science majors may also be available. The department serves 40–50 majors and a similar number of minors, contributes to general education, and supports students in biology, nursing, exercise science, physics, and environmental studies. It holds an American Chemical Society endorsement and offers majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department is committed to helping a diverse student population succeed in their chosen careers and provides a wide range of student support. The successful candidate will engage students inside and outside the classroom through evidence-based teaching and proactive mentoring. Course and laboratory design should incorporate contemporary topics and techniques, follow best practices, use active learning, and prepare students for work in modern laboratories. The position is exempt and not eligible for remote work. Pay is $3,800–$4,000 for a standard 1.0-credit (four-semester-hour) course; new part-time faculty begin at $3,800 (Adjunct Level 1). The term runs February 1 through May 25. Lecture offerings are primarily during the day, 8:00–11:30 a.m.; laboratories meet 1:00–4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The essential functions are primarily performed indoors, with limited exposure to outdoor weather. Work is often sedentary and involves remaining stationary for extended periods. The position requires speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, close and distance vision for reading documents and viewing screens, and repetitive fine motor skills. Occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds may be required. Qualified applicants who can perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations will be considered.
Requirements
- M.S. in biochemistry or chemistry.
- Desire to teach undergraduate students in a comprehensive liberal arts setting.
