About The Position

The Instrumentation and Control Lab, directed by Dr. Daniel G. Cole at the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering, focuses on high-assurance systems and cybersecurity for critical infrastructure, with particular emphasis on industrial control and SCADA systems. Research in the lab integrates advanced control techniques, system fault-tolerance, and resilience to develop secure and reliable solutions for critical energy sectors. The lab's work is supported by leading federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in operational technology cybersecurity, industrial control systems, and cyber-physical systems.
  • Prior experience conducting or leading research in OT cybersecurity.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design a new three-credit graduate course, ME 2108: Cybersecurity-by-Design for Operational Technology Systems.
  • Develop course content across four modules covering OT fundamentals, consequence analysis, defensive cybersecurity architecture design, and active defense design.
  • Create and evaluate three hands-on research projects.
  • Create and evaluate a foundational exam.
