About The Position

Leidos' Defense Systems is seeking an Additive Manufacturing Engineer to join the Advanced Materials Department. This role involves supporting diverse programs with materials engineering expertise, from R&D to manufacturing support. The department is equipped with analysis equipment, multi-physics modeling capabilities, and experimental lab space. The successful candidate will contribute to software development (full-stack web and hardware-based applications), solve complex engineering challenges using analytical and experimental approaches, collaborate with teams to gather requirements and design solutions, and assist with network and computer system administration. Requirements

  • Resident of North Alabama area in order to work on-site at the Huntsville, AL office.
  • Ability to work in both collaborative team environments and independently.
  • Experience with design for additive manufacturing (DfAM).
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing support structure design.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing processes, preferably metal systems.
  • Experience using additive slicing and analysis software such as 3DXpert or similar tools.
  • Ability to support hardware systems including setup, operation, and troubleshooting of AM equipment.
  • Interest & motivation in learning advanced additive manufacturing technologies and materials.
  • Bachelor’s degree with 4-8 years’ experience a minimum 3.0 GPA in mechanical engineering, materials science, manufacturing engineering, or a related field from an ABET accredited university
  • Master’s degree and 2 - 4 years experience

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with metal additive manufacturing processes such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and/or directed energy deposition (DED).
  • Experience with build parameter development, process optimization, and qualification.
  • Familiarity with post-processing methods including heat treatment, machining, and surface finishing.
  • Experience with simulation tools for additive manufacturing (thermal, distortion, support optimization).
  • Exposure to in-situ monitoring systems or sensor integration in AM platforms.
  • Programming or scripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for data analysis or workflow automation.

Responsibilities

  • Software development with a focus on full-stack web applications with user input that interact with databases and other third-party applications.
  • Software development with a focus on hardware-based applications that interface with various sensor devices.
  • Solving complex engineering challenges with both analytical and experimental approaches.
  • Collaborating with a team, management, and the department to gather requirements, analyze problems, and design solutions for software focused tasks.
  • Assist system administration with supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining networks and computer systems that are utilized within the department.
