About The Position

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking an Addictions Medicine Physician to cover clinic work as part of our continuum of services for clients seeking assistance for mental health and substance use (MHSU) disorders. This role involves participating in team-based care for adults diagnosed with substance use disorders who experience significant impairment in functioning within the community. The population served often has a history of substance use challenges, with or without mental health conditions, leading to hospitalizations, unstable housing, or difficulties with daily living. Other factors may include a high risk for co-occurring medical conditions, refractory treatment history, or risk of harm to self or others. Addiction Medicine Physicians in Vancouver Community settings approach care by placing the patient at the center, engaging in inter-disciplinary team-based care (consultation and/or most responsible provider), providing culturally safe and responsive care for Indigenous patients, practicing trauma-informed care, having a recovery-oriented approach, and including families whenever possible, while employing the principles of community-based addictions medicine care. The physician will work within a team that may include nurses, allied health care professionals, rehabilitation professionals, peers, nurse practitioners, and other physicians, including psychiatrists. Skills required include the full scope of addiction medicine and substance use care, such as medical assessment, withdrawal management, co-occurring disorders, and pain management. Applicants must have completed the BC Provincial Opioid Addiction Treatment Support Program (POATSP) course and preceptorship and be able to prescribe all oral opioid agonist therapies (OAT). The physician will adhere to organizational guidelines, policies, and procedures, including harm reduction, trauma-informed, and culturally safe practices. The role fosters a collaborative inter-professional practice environment to enhance client-centered services and works within a self-directed team to achieve excellence in care.
