About The Position

Suffolk County Department of Health Services is seeking an Addictions Counselor for the North County Opioid Treatment Program (OTP). This role involves interviewing and screening individuals seeking admission, planning and implementing individualized treatment plans, monitoring patient progress, and providing individual and group counseling services. The position also requires maintaining patient records, monitoring urine sample collection, and collaborating with supervisors and clinic staff. Additionally, the counselor may conduct educational sessions, workshops, and training programs, and assist patients with job training, social services, and referrals to other agencies.

Requirements

  • Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification
  • Current certification from NYS Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS)
  • Possession of the requirements necessary to be designated as a Qualified Health Professional (QHP) with one year of experience or satisfactory completion of a training program in the treatment of substance use disorders
  • Uphold the OASAS Scope of Practice and the Canon of Ethical Principals

Responsibilities

  • Interviews and screens individuals seeking admission to Suffolk County Opioid Treatment Programs
  • Plans, implements and evaluates an individualized treatment plan for each patient
  • Monitors patient progress and makes recommendations for further treatment if necessary
  • Provides individual and group counseling services
  • Maintains patient records and reports
  • Monitors the collection of patient urine samples and keeps pertinent records
  • Collaborates with supervisors and clinic staff regarding patient progress and patient services
  • May conduct education and information sessions, workshops, and training programs for individuals with substance use disorders and members of their community
  • May counsel patients regarding job training and placement, advise them of available social services, and refer them to other agencies if necessary
