About The Position

Under the general supervision of and in collaboration with the Director, Acute Pain Service, Adult Anesthesia and the Manager Health Services, Pain Clinic, the incumbent is responsible for attending to the pain management needs of patients in the post-operative period. Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and participates in developing and implementing plans to address these needs. Assists the Anesthetist in establishing regional catheters and supports clinical trials/data collection. The incumbent assumes a leadership role in coordinating patient pain management care within the health care team to ensure quality patient care outcomes and participates in an interdisciplinary patient centered approach to care based on best practice. Demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals, and objectives of the Health Sciences Centre.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent relevant clinical experience in Acute Surgery, PACU, Anesthesia, and/or Intensive Care required.
  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with Employer policy.
  • Knowledge of College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
  • Knowledge of Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Knowledge of Health Sciences Centre (HSC) policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Nursing care concerning Acute Pain Management.
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
  • Knowledge of Roles and responsibilities of members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize care for patients experiencing acute pain.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to delegate care appropriately and monitor outcomes of delegated care.
  • Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands.
  • Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities.
  • Ability to perform independently and as a member of the health care team.

Nice To Haves

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Intensive Care or Post-Anesthesia Program preferred.
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish IV lines, setting up and assisting with epidurals and other regional blocks, and setting up invasive monitoring preferred.
  • Data processing and computer experience are preferred.
