About The Position

The Department of Children and Youth is seeking an Activity Specialist to support our Summer Youth Employment Program initiative. The primary responsibilities of the Activity Specialist will include: design daily and weekly lesson plans, ensure the implementation of daily group activities, and provide individual and small group instruction as required.

Requirements

• Experience working with youth in area of specialty
• Excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work well with young people and their parents
• Program design and curriculum management or implementation experience
• Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
• Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time
• Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork
• Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents
• Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation
• Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct a home visit and/or field work.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with or knowledge of best practices in youth development preferred

Responsibilities

• Develop specialty curriculum in conjunction with the Educational Specialist and Program Coordinator
• Set goals for a specialty component in conjunction with Educational Specialist and Program Coordinator
• Create a nurturing and supportive environment for the youth
• Implementation of various educational, social skills development, and recreational activities in relation to specialty activity
• Engages children in activities that support academic enrichment and augment the classroom experience
• Act as a liaison with parents
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Assists with the implementation of daily group specialty activities
• Designs daily and weekly specialty lesson plans
• Provides individual or small group instruction as required
