About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan dedicated to expanding opportunities for individuals, families, and communities through education, career, and supportive services. The COMPASS Elementary Summer Camp Program, funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), provides high-quality summer programming focused on the academic, social, and emotional development of youth. The program offers a safe, engaging, and enriching environment where participants can explore STEM, arts, sports, leadership, and social-emotional learning through hands-on experiences. ESH is seeking a dynamic, creative, and dedicated Activity Specialist passionate about youth development and enrichment programming. The Activity Specialist will be responsible for designing and leading engaging activities within their assigned specialty area (Basketball, Martial Arts/Boxing, Volleyball, or Dance) while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and structured environment for all participants.

Requirements

  • Training, certification, or demonstrated expertise in Basketball, Martial Arts/Boxing, Volleyball, or Dance.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth in structured program settings.
  • Strong group management, conflict resolution, and behavior management skills.
  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging, skill-based physical activity instruction.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of youth development and safe physical activity practices.
  • Ability to engage, motivate, and lead youth in structured group activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with basic program operations and youth safety standards.
  • Knowledge of classroom/group management techniques.
  • Basic proficiency with technology platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, and Google Meet.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety, supervision, and active engagement of all participants during program activities.
  • Design and implement structured lesson plans in your assigned specialty area (Basketball, Martial Arts/Boxing, Volleyball, or Dance).
  • Develop skill-based curriculum that supports physical development, teamwork, discipline, and youth growth.
  • Facilitate activities that build new skills while reinforcing previously learned techniques and concepts.
  • Support program operations, including supervision during snack/supper, dismissal procedures, field trips, and special events.
  • Collaborate with Youth Educators to support activity facilitation and youth engagement.
  • Maintain strong group management and behavior expectations in all activities.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment at all times.
  • Build positive, professional relationships with youth and staff while serving as a role model.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and proper care of all equipment and program materials.
  • Address behavioral concerns in collaboration with the Program Director or Assistant Program Director.
  • Organize and maintain assigned equipment and storage areas.
  • Participate in all required trainings, professional development sessions, and staff meetings.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, reliability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Support agency events and community engagement activities as needed.
  • Follow all East Side House Settlement (ESH) policies, procedures, and standards.
