About The Position

The Activity Director is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive activity program designed to meet the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive needs of nursing home residents. The Activity Director creates meaningful and engaging opportunities that encourage residents to remain active, socially connected, independent, and involved in their community. Activities are planned according to each resident’s interests, abilities, preferences, cultural background, and individual care needs. The Activity Director organizes a wide variety of daily and weekly programs, including arts and crafts, music and singing, games, exercise and movement programs, trivia, educational activities, religious and spiritual services, social gatherings, movie programs, birthday celebrations, holiday events, and community outings. The Director also provides individualized and small-group activities for residents who are unable or prefer not to participate in larger group programs, including residents with physical limitations, dementia, or other cognitive impairments. The Activity Director works closely with nursing staff, social services, dietary services, therapy departments, administration, residents, and families to ensure that activities support each resident’s overall plan of care and quality of life. They assess residents’ interests and participation levels, encourage involvement without creating pressure, and make appropriate adjustments to programs based on changing needs and abilities. The Director also communicates with residents and families to gather feedback and identify new opportunities for meaningful engagement. In addition to planning activities, the Activity Director is responsible for maintaining accurate and timely documentation, including activity assessments, care plans, progress notes, attendance records, participation records, and monthly activity calendars. They ensure that programs are conducted safely and in accordance with facility policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Activity Director may also coordinate volunteers, entertainers, community organizations, and outside vendors to provide additional programs and services for residents. The Activity Director demonstrates compassion, patience, creativity, leadership, and strong communication skills while working with residents of varying abilities and backgrounds. They create a welcoming and positive environment where residents feel valued, respected, and included. Through consistent interaction and meaningful programming, the Activity Director plays an important role in improving residents’ quality of life, promoting socialization, reducing isolation, supporting emotional well-being, and helping residents maintain a sense of purpose and independence.
