About The Position

The Activity Director is responsible for directing and supervising the activity program, engaging residents in meaningful activities related to resident individual needs in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role involves planning, coordinating, and implementing a goal-oriented activity program to meet the needs and wishes of each individual resident, considering their limitations. The position also includes supervising activity personnel, managing inventory and supplies within budgetary constraints, fostering community and family involvement, and ensuring resident safety and satisfaction. The Activities Director serves as part of the facility's interdisciplinary team and is responsible for maintaining safety standards and adhering to facility guidelines.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990.
  • OR Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a therapeutic activities program.
  • OR Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant.
  • OR Has completed a training course approved by the State.

Responsibilities

  • Plans a goal-oriented activity program to meet the needs and wishes of each individual resident in accordance with resident limitations.
  • Coordinates activity plan and schedule with nursing plan of care in accordance with resident limitations.
  • Initiates motivation of residents to increase desire to participate in life enrichment activities.
  • Supervises activities, including preparation, participation, clean up and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Coordinates, supervises and participates with large group special events for holidays, etc.
  • Coordinates reservations of all common areas for family events, etc., and communicates to all departments.
  • Prepares and posts monthly activity schedule meeting life enrichment guidelines and resident/tenant preferences.
  • Interviews new admissions and develops initial life enrichment care plans and reviews quarterly.
  • Monitors the entire therapeutic activities system to ensure optimum life enrichment for all residents and tenants.
  • Attends resident care conferences and completes appropriate MDS sections, care plans and assessments for the department.
  • Ensures that care plans are followed and documentation is completed by all staff.
  • Monitors participation in life enrichment programs of residents and tenants.
  • Addresses concerns with social service and/or nursing.
  • Follows all policies and procedures in regards to life enrichment standards.
  • Customer satisfaction is measured and life enrichments events are changed as appropriate.
  • Serves as part of the facility interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of residents/tenants.
  • Interviews, hires, and orients activity personnel.
  • Performs annual evaluations for all staff in the department.
  • Prepares work schedules in a timely manner to meet the needs of the department.
  • Develops and conducts in-service programs to enhance staff knowledge.
  • Monitors standards such as staff approach, staff tone, verbal/non-verbal expresses etc. to maintain life enrichment quality and addresses issues identified.
  • Completes payroll change forms for new hires, terminations, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Monitors time clock punches for accuracy and enters PTO time in the time clock to ensure accurate payrolls.
  • Communicates in an open manner with all team members.
  • Assists in establishment of metrics such as paid hours per resident day and manages to meet the goal.
  • Holds monthly department meetings to provide updates, receive feedback and educate staff.
  • Maintains safety standards.
  • Manages inventory to meet all requirements while staying within budgetary constraints and offering a quality product.
  • Keeps inventory and supplies organized and easily accessible for staff.
  • Special equipment and supplies necessary to accommodate residents with a physical disability or other persons with special needs must be provided as appropriate.
  • Communicates with Administrator of any equipment or supplies needed.
  • Ensures resident safety by ensuring activity office, closets are locked when not in use or supervised.
  • Fosters family and community support of the activity program (e.g., through newsletters, networking, activities which bring family members or members of the community into the facility, etc.).
  • Recruits and retains an appropriate volunteer base.
  • Creates positive working relationships with all volunteers and outside activity providers, churches, music, schools, etc.
  • Seeks input from joining departments on the effectiveness of the activity department.
  • Consistently seeks new ideas and methods to meet resident's needs.
  • Adheres to facility guidelines in response to resident's behaviors.
  • Provides quality feedback to all staff on an ongoing basis regarding their interactions with residents in and out of activities.
  • Ability to multistep tasks to ensure completion of all required tasks.
  • Communications with others (courtesy, voice tone, facial expression, gestures) are appropriate at all times and do not cause discord among the staff, families or visitors.
  • Ability to do assigned tasks without the need for strict supervision.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information.
  • Completes work within authorized time to assure compliance with facility standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports facility mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Serves on committees such as QAPI and develops department-specific projects.
  • Attends morning meeting and provides updates for others.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for effective infection control practices.
  • Develops and updates departmental policies and procedures.
  • Promotes teamwork by showing dignity and respect to peers, including peers of other departments.
  • Assists in development of the annual budget for the activity department.
  • Understands all job tasks of the department and can perform them as needed.
  • Assists in other areas as necessary, including but not limited to front desk coverage.
