About The Position

Transitional Services for New York, Inc. (TSINY) is a not-for-profit, community-based mental health organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals recovering from mental illness and fostering their independence. We are seeking an Activities Coordinator for our Residential Mental Health program in Queens Village, New York. This role involves coordinating recreational activities, establishing relationships with corporate sponsors for offsite events, organizing special events, and collaborating with other TSINY programs to promote social network development among participants. Travel between programs and to offsite events is required.

Requirements

  • Driver License Required
  • High School diploma
  • 1-years’ experience in planning recreational and social events for special needs populations
  • Be able to sit or stand as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May require walking, primarily on a level surface, for short periods throughout the day, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be able to reach above shoulder heights, below the waist or lift as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • During a declared disaster, assume and adhere to assigned Job Action role(s) consistent with Disaster Preparedness Plan.
  • Follow procedure in accordance to change-of-shift checklist with oncoming shift and sign change-of-shift checklist where needed.
  • Meet with supervisor for supervision.
  • Attend staff meetings. Read staff meeting minutes if absent.
  • Read Communication Log Book.
  • Converse with shift going off duty for any pertinent information, i.e., appointments, overall residents’ behaviors, changes in medication, etc.
  • Document in Communication Book any pertinent information regarding residents.
  • Follow procedure in accordance to change of shift checklist and sign.
  • Attend Agency-wide meetings.
  • Attend special onsite and offsite training, seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Be available to residents on an as-needed and crisis basis.
  • Check revised schedules for possible changes in hours/shifts and for holiday coverage.
  • Familiarization with personnel policy and emergency manuals.
  • Submit time sheets bi-weekly.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate recreational activities for residents of Hope House I, Hope House II, Bronx II, and The Williams.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with corporate sponsors to obtain tickets to offsite events.
  • Organize special events such as barbeques and Family and Friends Day events.
  • Coordinate with other individuals in TSINY responsible for activity planning to integrate activities across TSINY programs.
  • Promote the development of healthy social networks for those involved in our programs.
  • Educate and encourage residents to use leisure time appropriately and constructively.
  • Plan special events for weekends or evenings.
  • Coordinate special events with Program Directors of the Community Residence Programs, including any funds needed, time of events, number of Agency vehicles needed, staff to be assigned, etc.
  • Escort residents shopping for personal needs.
  • Write Medicaid Progress Notes reflecting restorative services, if applicable.
  • Coordinate Special Olympic activities.
  • Post weekly activities/groups and excursions.
  • Submit travel vouchers.
  • Use petty cash to purchase recreation supplies.
  • Participate and supervise residents during fire drills.
  • Update bulletin boards/decorate and coordinate activities for specific parties/holidays and birthdays.
  • Coordination of annual "Family and Friends Day" events.
  • Coordinate resident holiday activities and parties.
  • Make sure Special Olympics medical forms are completed and returned.
  • Teach residents socialization skills.
  • Submit receipts for petty cash spent.
  • Dispense and/or supervise morning, afternoon and evening medication.
  • Assist with meal preparation when needed.
  • Report any pertinent information regarding residents and facility to shift supervisor throughout your shift.
  • Incident reports completed on same day of incident and report given to shift supervisor or administrators.
  • Visit and document visits to hospitalized residents.
  • Provide supervision for residents during dining hours, if assigned.
  • Make sure residents are dressed appropriately before leaving the facility.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
