About The Position

The Substance Abuse Specialist works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary care team to identify, assess, and provide stage-wise engagement, persuasion, active treatment, harm reduction, relapse prevention, and recovery support for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and co-occurring substance use disorders. The ACT Substance abuse Specialist also supports member wellness and recovery goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Health, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, or related field and two (2) years of experience working with adults diagnosed with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), co-occurring disorders, or substance use disorders; OR Any combination of education and behavioral health experience totaling six (6) years, including at least two (2) years working with individuals diagnosed with Serious Mental Illness, co-occurring disorders, or substance use disorders.
  • Must have a fingerprint clearance card issued by the AZ Department of Public Safety or eligible to receive one within eight (8) weeks of hire.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid AZ Driver’s License with state minimum insurance coverage and ability to meet and maintain Copa Health’s acceptable driving requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the ACT Team’s subject matter expert regarding substance abuse disorders, co-occurring disorders, recovery supports, and evidence-based treatment interventions.
  • Supports and collaborates with the other Substance Abuse Specialist in consistent implementation of an integrated co-occurring program for adults with SMI and substance use disorders consistent with ACT and IDDT evidence-based program standards.
  • Provides outreach, engagement, stage-wise treatment interventions, recovery planning, relapse prevention, and harm reduction services in clinic, home and community settings.
  • Conducts substance use screenings, assessments, and ongoing reassessments utilizing ASAM criteria, DSM criteria, and evidence-based assessment tools to determine member needs and readiness for change.
  • Provide individual and group substance use counseling and education.
  • Coordinates care with detoxification programs, residential treatment facilities, outpatient substance use providers, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) providers, hospitals, criminal justice systems, and community recovery supports.
