Coordinates and delivers direct spiritual care to the hospital's patients/families/staff, especially at Milford Campus. Communicates effectively with hospital (both campuses) staff and community clergy (especially Milford) about ongoing spiritual care needs. Documents all interventions and maintains appropriate patient records. Is actively engaged in the ACPE Certification process - evaluated yearly, goal of achieving certification as a Certified Educator in 3 years. Co-supervises CPE students after reaching Phase 1B of ACPE certification. Supervises CPE students under local and national faculty supervision when reaching Phase 2. Participates in all required education, clinical and written requirements for ACPE Certification: individual and peer group supervision, writing and presenting papers, demonstration competencies, regular communication with national certification. Requirements

Master of Divinity degree from an accredites school with .A.T.S. or approved APC degree equivalency.
A minimum of 4 CPE Units Completed, including Level 2 CPE.
3-5 years of healthcare chaplaincy experience, including: direct pastoral care with the sick and their caregivers; intra- and inter- departmental administrative experience.
Certification eligibility in Association of Professional Chaplains.
Active membership and maintained certification in the ACPE Certification Process.
Demonstrated emotional and spiritual maturity sufficient to provide chaplaincy skills and leadership in complex multi-disciplinary and multi-faith tertiary care clinical settings.
Demonstrated educational and administrative skill as coordinator, chaplain and aspiring educator.
Adheres to the CPE Supervisory Training curriculum including quarterly re-negotiatin of learning contract, goals and certification time-line.
Actvely participates in a CEC peer group.
Attendance at all scheduled SOS (Seminar on Supervision) Conferences.
Current enrollment in the ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisory Program at Bridgeport Hospital.

Responsibilities

Provides spiritual assessment and spiritual care for patients and families throughout the hospital - especially Milford Campus. Will focus specifically on oncology patients and their caregivers. Provides brief, supportive consultation or counseling to patients, staff, employees, outpatients, families, etc.. Communicates and coordinates spiritual care efficiently between the Bridgeport Campus and the Milford Campus. Offers regular spiritual care services to the assigned areas (oncology and Milford Campus), including but not limited to: blessing of hands, ashes (Ash Wednesday), spiritual care week services, staff debriefs and support, memorial services, other chapel or unit brief spiritual rituals and services, as needed.
Responds promptly to direct referrals by pager, phone or EPIC consult. Makes initial visits and follow up visits to oncology patients and families in assigned hospital areas.
Functions as part of the interdisciplinary team. Attends family meetings with medical staff and case managers by specific request of patient, family or staff in assigned units.Serve on other Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Health committees as requested and/or appropriate - oncology, leadership meetings at Milford Campus, safety huddles, ethics consultation.
Documents and/or reviews all spiritual interventions with patient and family in EPIC. Offers ongoing EPIC training to CPE students. Reviews and coordinates spiritual care notes for oncology patients, including making appropriate EPIC notes for follow-up.
Communicates with Roman Catholic priests and community clergy regarding specific requests for their intervention. Assist in developing and carrying out policies and procedures that will foster good working relationships with the pastoral ministry of the religious communities of the greater Bridgeport area and Milford. This may include membership in community organizations, as appropriate and consultation with community clergy relative to educational opportunities about patient needs and community based spiritual care.
Reports pertinent on-going patient and family spiritual needs to on-call adjunct chaplains and CPE interns and residents.
Offers regular in-services/ didactics to staff and community clergy on spiritual aspects, especially oncology spiritual care.
ACPE Certification Process: Begins and completes the tasks associated with demonstrating competencies, preparation of materials, and meeting with the ACPE Certification Commission.
Cooperate with other personnel in the teaching programs of the Spiritual Care department and of other departments of the Hospital - especially Oncology and Milford Campus - or affiliated agencies as skills and time permits. Provide coordinating leadership for CPE and other education programming at Milford Campus
Participates in recruiting, interviewing and supervising Clinical Pastoral Education interns as assigned and in compliance with ACPE Standards and department policies. Phase 1A: Silent observation of CPE groups Phase 1B: Increased participation to co-supervision, with appropriate theoretical support and personal growth in competencies. Phase 2: Under supervision, develop, supervise and teach programs of clinical pastoral education for department staff , ministry and chaplaincy students (Chaplain Interns and/or Residents) and religious professionals. Organize and implement programs, which are consistent with ACPE standards, monitor department compliance with ACPE accreditation requirements including preparing for periodic accreditation review. Recruit students for the Department of Spiritual Care 's educational programs. Establish and maintain immediate communication with prospective students, to answer questions about all our CPE programs. Provide direction and coordination of other education and training programs.
Begins and completes the tasks associated with preparation for and meeting with the ACPE Certification Commission. Yearly evaluation of progress towards certification can lead to renewal or end of contract.
