About The Position

Marsh is seeking an Accounting Policy and Advisory - Senior Specialist for its high-performing Controllership team. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the NYC office. The Senior Specialist will collaborate across Finance, Corporate Development, and Marsh’s four businesses to shape and support accounting conclusions on complex matters, new initiatives, and strategic transactions. This role reports to the Global Head of Accounting Policy and Advisory and will be a key member of a highly visible team serving as a trusted technical accounting resource across Marsh’s global businesses.

Requirements

  • Certified public accountant
  • Bachelor’s and/or a Master’s degree in Accounting.
  • 8+ years of providing technical accounting advice in-house within an organization and/or within the public accounting space.
  • Experience with complex transactions, with at least 2 years specifically focusing on revenue recognition (other areas of expertise are a plus).

  • Extensive technical accounting experience gained in a large Big 4 accounting firm’s client-serving technical accounting group and/or National office.
  • Ability to balance providing accurate accounting advice while being commercial and practical.
  • Other areas of topical expertise beyond ASC 606 and ASC 340-40.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert in ASC 606 (revenue recognition) and ASC 340-40 (costs to obtain and fulfill).
  • Partner with local and regional Controllers by resolving technical inquiries relating to the revenue recognition (ASC 606) of new customer products/services and changes to the contractual terms of existing services.
  • Assist with transaction accounting advisory for mergers and acquisitions and strategic investments; partnering with local and regional Controllers to resolve ad-hoc due diligence questions relating to ASC 606 (revenue recognition).
  • Equip the local and regional Controllers’ teams with technical accounting guidance through the development and delivery of targeted training in complex accounting areas and through the creation of a contract analysis tool.
  • Partner with other members of the Accounting Policy and Advisory team to design and conduct training for the Corporate Development department, aimed at educating the team on common revenue recognition (and related matters) issues identified during the due diligence process.
  • Work closely with other key stakeholders, including but not limited to: Legal, Tax, Treasury, Controllership, and Marsh’s four businesses.
  • Communicate accounting guidance to Marsh’s Controllers by designing, maintaining, and refining accounting policies and/or preparing accounting memos that are easy to understand and include sufficient detail to support effective implementation.
  • Advise management of any new accounting guidance issued by standard setters and regulators that may affect the organization, and support Marsh in the adoption and implementation of new standards across the business.
  • Support SEC reporting activities through the review of applicable changes to the financial statements, footnotes, and MD&A within Marsh’s 10Q and 10K.
  • Support the team’s external engagement with Marsh’s external auditors and the SEC, the FASB, FINRA, and relevant trade groups to help ensure Marsh’s views are appropriately represented.
