About The Position

The Accounting Manager will manage student accounting, receivables, financial reporting, tax reporting, and compliance functions that support the University’s student financial service operations. This position ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of student-related financial data, reconciliations, reporting, and compliance activities in accordance with university policies, Commonwealth of Virginia requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations. The Accounting Manager supervises accounting staff, serves as a subject matter expert for student receivables management, develops and maintains policies and procedures, resolves complex accounting and system discrepancies, and supports audit readiness, operational efficiency, informed decision-making, student success, and the overall financial integrity of the institution.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise or manage accounting staff, including assigning work, reviewing work products, training employees, monitoring deadlines, addressing performance concerns, and ensuring accountability for accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently research complex accounting, reporting, reconciliation, system, or compliance discrepancies; identify root causes; document findings; and recommend corrective action.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, write, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, desk guides, internal controls, compliance calendars, and audit-ready documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, improve, and document accounting processes, including the responsible use of automation tools, artificial intelligence, reporting systems, and other technology solutions to increase efficiency, reduce manual work, strengthen data accuracy, and improve internal controls.
  • Knowledge of tax reporting, regulatory reporting, or compliance reporting requirements, preferably in a higher education, governmental, public-sector, or accounts receivable environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, reconciliations, accounts receivable management, internal controls, and compliance practices.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, including the ability to interpret financial data, reconcile large data sets, prepare reports, explain findings, and communicate accounting or compliance matters clearly to staff, leadership, auditors, and campus partners.
  • Experience with ERP, financial management, or student information systems used to process, reconcile, report, or analyze financial activity, preferably Ellucian Banner.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance preferred.
  • CPA, CPA candidate, CGFM, or other relevant accounting, governmental accounting, financial management, or higher education compliance credential preferred.
