About The Position

Patriot Maritime is a leading ship owner and maritime contractor to the U.S. Government providing ship management services to MARAD, the Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. ( www.patriotships.com ) Offices are located in Concord, CA and Houston, TX. Patriot is embarking on a digital transformation for 2026. This position will serve a critical role in supporting that transformation and in shaping the company’s new and improved processes. The ideal candidate will be a strong manager who takes initiative and is ready to push forward a rapidly growing mid-sized company. Serving as a key partner to the Controller and CFO, the Accounting Manager provides leadership to the accounting team, supports government and reimbursable contract accounting, and oversees systems and processes that promote transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required.
  • 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience (government contracting or regulated environment preferred)
  • Strong communication skills within the accounting team, with executives and government customers.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with FAR preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Dynamics SL/Dynamics Business Center or similar cloud-based ERP systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and develop 7 accounting team members, ensuring compliance-driven execution of daily accounting activities.
  • Establish and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls aligned with regulatory, contractual, and organizational standards.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, documentation, and continuous improvement in support of government-facing operations.
  • Manage the monthly close process in coordination with the Controller and CFO.
  • Prepare, review, and approve journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations in accordance with GAAP and government contract requirements.
  • Assist with variance analysis and provide defensible explanations for financial results.
  • Oversee accounting and billing for government and reimbursable contracts.
  • Manage labor billings for reimbursable labor, including overtime and contract-specific labor classifications.
  • Ensure compliance with FAR, agency-specific requirements, and contract terms.
  • Lead system implementations and process improvements to strengthen compliance and efficiency.
  • Ability to proactively find, propose and execute initiatives to optimize the accounting team’s process and performance.
  • Serve as system owner for Microsoft Dynamics or equivalent ERP.
  • Ensure system configurations support audit trails and internal control requirements.
  • Serve as a primary contact for internal, external, and government auditors.
  • Prepare documentation and support financial statement and contract audits.
