About The Position

The Finance team manages the organization's financial health, including accounting, payroll, accounts payable, financial reporting, compliance, internal controls, and audit readiness. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Controller and has direct reports. The Accounting Manager oversees the organization’s accounts payable process and manages assigned general ledger and close activities, including investment accounting, prepaid expenses, accruals, and reconciliations. The role combines staff supervision with hands-on accounting, provides backup for payroll processing, and strengthens systems and internal controls. The Accounting Manager supports financial reporting, the annual audit, and Form 990 preparation, and works with the Controller to develop broader accounting leadership responsibilities based on demonstrated performance and organizational needs.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, nonprofit accounting, AP, investment accounting, prepaid expenses, accruals, reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Knowledge of internal controls, segregation of duties, audit support, compliance documentation, and financial reporting best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel/ Word) and the ability to work effectively in accounting, payroll, procurement, expense, and database systems.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use systems such as Sage Intacct, Ramp, BILL Spend & Expense, UKG, Klient, Salesforce, PowerLender, and related platforms.
  • Understanding of transaction flow from approval through payment, posting, reconciliation, reporting, audit support, and tax compliance.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including explaining financial information to finance and non-finance staff.
  • Ability to manage team priorities, delegate effectively, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and contribute to a collaborative Finance team.
  • Ability to quickly learn technical information, accounting standards, internal policies, and software systems.
  • Working knowledge of payroll processing, payroll accounting, and the controls needed to maintain accurate and confidential payroll records.
  • Ability to supervise, coach, and develop staff, provide constructive feedback, and hold employees accountable for accurate and timely work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and at least 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Required experience: AP, month-end close, reconciliations, audit schedules, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Strong Knowledge of GAAP and demonstrated experience leading core accounting operations, including financial reporting, general ledger activities, close processes, reconciliations, and audit reports
  • Demonstrated ability to improve processes, create structure, and lead a team through change.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff or leading and reviewing accounting work; prior direct supervisory experience preferred.
  • Preferred experience: nonprofit accounting, grant-funded programs, or fund accounting.
  • Preferred systems experience: Sage Intacct, Ramp, BILL Spend & Expense, UKG, Klient, Salesforce, or similar financial systems.
  • Active CPA license or CPA eligibility preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and leadership in the management of accounting practices
  • Oversee journal entries, balance sheet reconciliation, and general ledger maintenance
  • Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Hands-on with the AP process and the EE reimbursement and credit card process
  • Partner with HR to attract and select quality, diverse candidates; onboard, train, and build connections with employees.
  • Determine the relevant work priorities and expectations for the role and communicate to staff; evaluate and manage performance; determine interventions or corrective actions when needed.
  • Lead staff through regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, tailored development plans, and skill-building. Facilitate regular team meetings and implement feedback loops to boost morale and retention.
