About The Position

The Finance Manager oversees the organization's daily financial operations and ensures compliance across a multifaceted New Jersey housing and human services organization. This role leads accounting functions for emergency shelter, transitional housing, Housing Supports, and a real estate portfolio consisting of 17 affordable housing properties. Key responsibilities include monthly and year-end closings, financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll allocations, revenue reconciliations, cash-flow monitoring, grant and program budgeting, fund accounting, cost allocations, contract billing, and reimbursement requests. The Finance Manager oversees individual project accounting and parent-level consolidations, partners with program leadership to monitor financial performance, and maintains strong internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure the integrity of financial data. This position also supervises a small accounting team, including a Staff Accountant responsible for Medicaid billing for Housing Supports. The successful candidate will combine hands-on technical expertise with effective team leadership to support clean audits, regulatory compliance, and accurate, timely reporting to senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum 4 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in non-profit fund accounting.
  • Deep understanding of GAAP, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), and HUD reporting requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of accrual accounting and payroll taxes.
  • Demonstrate accuracy and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate to and supervise junior finance staff.
  • Proficiency with non-profit accounting software (e.g. Blackbaud Financial Edge, Euna Budget Questica, ADP Workforce, MRI Affordable Housing or equivalent), advanced Excel and automated workflows.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word and advanced Excel required.
