The Nelnet Tax Credit Services (NTCS) division earns advisory and consulting fees for its services to solar developers. Nelnet also participates in co-development and co-ownership of solar projects for long-term cash flows. This role is crucial for the financial management and reporting of NTCS operations and investments. Key responsibilities include assisting with tax credit compliance and oversight, managing investor relations and reporting, project budgeting and forecasting, tax credit allocation and documentation, enhancing internal controls and processes through automation, collaborating with stakeholders, developing standard operating procedures, creating reporting dashboards, managing risk, and supporting team training and leadership.

Requirements

  • 4-year college degree in accounting or finance required.
  • 5+ years of experience in finance and/or accounting.
  • Prior leadership and supervisory experience required.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial, accounting, treasury, and capital market activities.
  • Strong HLBV accounting knowledge.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while leading team members and collaborating across the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to achieve goals.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the accuracy of accounting entries for the financial reporting of tax credit investment portfolios, adhering to GAAP.
  • Manage the accounting and financial statements for multiple legal entities, including intercompany transactions, minority interests, revenue recognition, and HLBV accounting.
  • Track and report on investment performance metrics such as ROI, IRR, and NPV.
  • Coordinate and oversee financial statement audits and internal controls, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data for tax credit investments.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements in managing tax credit projects and investor reporting.
  • Support team members with tax credit compliance and project oversight, ensuring adherence to program-specific rules, eligibility for tax credits, meeting deadlines, and proper documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external legal/tax advisors to ensure proper investment structuring and tax credit claims.
  • Prepare and deliver timely and accurate investor reports on tax credit investments, including performance, projected returns, and compliance status.
  • Manage communication with investors, providing insights into the financial health and progress of their investments.
  • Coordinate the distribution of tax credits to investors, including all related tax reporting and disclosures.
  • Assist in reviewing models and developing new, innovative products within the tax credit investment sector, presenting summaries that balance risks and opportunities.
  • Analyze financial scenarios for various opportunities and business models.
  • Manage the budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting for the NTCS division's operations, including consulting and advisory fee revenue, project ownership, investment performance, and operating expenses.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, solar development partners, third-party investors, tax consultants, legal advisors, and internal teams for tax credit reporting and compliance.
  • Collaborate with accounting, finance, and project teams to ensure effective execution of investment strategies.
  • Prepare and review cash flow and income statement forecasts, reporting historical results and future projections with a focus on business optimization through KPIs, efficiencies, dashboards, and financial acumen.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with tax credit investments.
  • Ensure all financial operations and transactions are legally compliant and align with investor agreements.
  • Lead, mentor, and guide junior accounting and finance staff within NTCS.
  • Stay current with GAAP changes related to HLBV, VIE, proportional amortization, and minority interest accounting to ensure investment compliance.
