Accounting & Financial Planning Manager - Remote

Bernardo Consulting Group LLC*, TX, TX
$105,000 - $130,000Remote

About The Position

Bernardo Consulting Group (BCG) specializes in designing and managing physical security projects for critical infrastructure clients - including industry-leading data center facilities across North America. We are recognized for our precision, technical depth, and ability to meet demanding project schedules. Our team includes security subject-matter experts, BIM professionals, project managers, and supporting roles all working remotely across the U.S. BCG is employee-owned and in an active growth phase. As we continue to grow, we seek individuals who embrace technical challenges and are committed to continuous professional development. BCG has reached the point where finance needs to be a function rather than a set of tasks. This role owns accounting operations and financial planning end to end, A/R, A/P, general ledger, close, and reporting, and builds the department around them. The finance team is expected to remain small for the foreseeable future, which means this is a hands-on role: you will be in the ledger and in the strategy conversations. BCG needs someone who can look at the whole business, tell ownership where the money should go, build the processes that let finance scale, and think seriously about how surplus capital gets deployed. You will inherit a clean operation and be asked to make it a department. We are not looking for someone who arrives with a fixed playbook. BCG's client mix, project economics, and cash profile do not map neatly onto a standard template, and the right person reasons from the business as it actually is rather than applying a framework and forcing a fit. Adaptability, first-principles thinking, and a willingness to revise your own recommendation when the facts change matter more here than pedigree.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including hands-on ownership of accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Demonstrated financial planning capability including budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and scenario modeling.
  • Experience supervising, developing, or directing the work of at least one team member.
  • Track record of building or substantially improving a finance process, control, or reporting system, not solely operating one that someone else designed.
  • Ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable recommendations for a non-financial audience, including business owners.
  • Demonstrated practical use and comfort level in use of AI tools in a professional accounting or finance workflow, with the judgment to know where they add value and where they introduce risk.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks accounting platform, and advanced spreadsheet and modeling skills.
  • Comfort operating in a small, fast-moving company where the standard answer is often not the right one, and where you will build the process rather than inherit it.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication - this is a fully remote role and communication is key

Nice To Haves

  • Professional services, engineering, architecture, or construction industry experience - project-based revenue, work-in-progress, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Experience with Odoo Accounting or a comparable modular ERP platform.
  • Proposal or bid pricing experience - cost build-up, rate development, and margin targeting.
  • Experience preparing financials for a transaction - sale, acquisition, lending, or outside investment.
  • Familiarity with employee ownership or profit-sharing structures.
  • Experience standing up or formalizing a finance function in a company under 50 employees.
  • Multi-state tax filing and payroll experience.
  • CPA or equivalent professional credential is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Own day-to-day accounting operations - accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
  • Manage and develop the finance team - setting priorities, reviewing work, and building redundancy so that no critical process depends on a single person.
  • Build out BCG's finance function: documented processes, internal controls, a close calendar, a reporting cadence, and the systems to support them.
  • Own financial planning and analysis - budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow projection, and scenario modeling as the business changes.
  • Develop project and proposal financials - cost build-up, pricing inputs, rate development, margin targets, and profitability review on completed work.
  • Analyze the business holistically and bring recommendations to ownership on where to invest, how to deploy surplus cash, and where margin is being lost.
  • Evaluate capital and investment options and present reasoned alternatives with tradeoffs and downside cases - not a single predetermined answer.
  • Apply AI tools to finance workflows - reconciliation, reporting, analysis, and document review - and exercise judgment about where automation earns its place and where it does not.
  • Maintain and improve BCG's accounting configuration within our ERP platform, partnering with internal IT resources on system changes.
  • Support BCG's long-term objective of building a business that could stand outside scrutiny - clean, defensible, well-documented financials that a lender, buyer, or outside investor could review without surprises.
  • Partner with ownership on recurring financial decisions including vendor and insurance cost review, compensation planning inputs, and capital purchases.

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D
  • Company-contributed 401(k)
  • Profit sharing - Employee Ownership & Profit Sharing principle
