About The Position

The State of Connecticut, CT Paid Leave Authority (the "Authority") is now accepting applications for an exciting opportunity as an Accounting Careers Trainee, with a target class of Accounts Examiner. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position located in Hartford, CT, Monday - Friday. This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office. The Accounting Careers Trainee will report to and work closely with the Contribution and Compliance Manager. Under the direction of the Contribution and Compliance Manager, the Accounting Careers Trainee will work with Authority staff, vendor partners, and other state agencies to support the contribution collection system, ensuring the ongoing solvency of the program. The Accounting Careers Trainee program will introduce the candidate to working in a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-focused environment. The Trainee will gain experience in reconciliation and auditing various payroll records, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations. As an Accounting Careers Trainee, you will be a part of a 1- or 2-year training program depending on your level of education. The length of the training program is 2 years for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program is 1 year for individuals with a master’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program for an individual who earns a master’s degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification is 1 year from the date the master’s degree is conferred or the end of the original 2-year training period, whichever comes first. There is a career progression pathway within the State of Connecticut, starting with Accounting Careers Trainee, advancing to Accounts Examiner, then Associate Accounts Examiner, and ending with Supervising Accounts Examiner.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of business mathematics and statistics.
  • Knowledge of business uses of information technology.
  • Knowledge of effective report writing.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or coursework using mathematical and analytical skills to reconcile accounts or identify discrepancies.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience or coursework involving audits and risk principles.
  • Experience or coursework in writing a financial report.
  • Experience or coursework where teamwork and collaboration were necessary.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel including creating and developing spreadsheets, using macros, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and importing and exporting data.
  • Experience working remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position.
  • Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period.
  • Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles.
  • May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates.
  • Performs related duties as required.
