About The Position

The Accounting Assistant provides routine bookkeeping and administrative support to the Accounting office. This position will help maintain accounting documentation, update records, and support reconciliations and other accounting projects while gaining practical experience in a professional accounting environment. Requirements

  • Current Washburn University student in good academic standing.
  • Eligible for Federal Work study employment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, email, and electronic file management, or ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage routine priorities, and ask questions when clarification is needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or declared major/minor in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
  • Experience with spreadsheets, bookkeeping, data entry, records management, or an office environment.
  • An interest in developing practical accounting and financial-administration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes, maintains, scans, files, retrieves, and prepares accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Performs accurate data entry and updates spreadsheets, logs, and other accounting records.
  • Assists staff with routine reconciliations, research, and follow-up on outstanding items.
  • Reviews documentation for completeness and routes questions or exceptions to the appropriate staff member.
  • Maintains confidentiality of financial, employee, student, and University information.
  • Follows established Accounting Office procedures, internal controls, and records-retention practices.
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.
  • Assists with special accounting, records-management, and office organization projects as time permits.
  • Provides general administrative support to Accounting Office staff.
