About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire an Accountant at Stateville Correctional Center. This position will review, analyze, prepare journal entries and reconcile a variety of reports, input all property transactions, and perform reconciliation activities of various funds and corresponding ledgers and spreadsheets. In addition, they will establish and monitor accounting systems, prepare and file quarterly reports of fixed assets, serve as lead worker, assist other Business Office staff and serve as back up to other accountants. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with courses in business administration and accounting or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
  • Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience applying and following professional accounting and auditing theory, principles, methods, and/or procedures.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience applying and using office methods, procedures, standard office accounting machines and/or equipment.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience performing the detailed work involving the application of accounting theory to routine accounting or auditing problems.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience evaluating accounting problems.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience analyzing and interpreting accounting records and reports.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience performing detailed work involving written or numerical data.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience making arithmetical calculations, either manually or by machine.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of professional work experience interpreting laws, rules, and regulations relating to state or non-state accounting or auditing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews, analyzes, prepares journal entries, and reconciles a variety of technical accounting reports generated via Fiscal and Commissary Trading System (F.A.C.T.S), Excel spreadsheets, and bank statements.
  • Inputs all property transactions into Property Control System including new acquisitions, transfers scraped and sold property, etc.
  • Performs reconciliation activities of various funds and corresponding ledgers and spreadsheets.
  • Establishes and monitors accounting systems.
  • Prepares and files quarterly reports of fixed assets.
  • Serves as designated lead worker.
  • Assists other Business Office staff in the performance of duties and serves as back up to other Accountants.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
