About The Position

Hawkeye Community College's Business Services office is looking for a full-time Accountant II to join their team. As an Accountant II, you are responsible for reconciling general ledger accounts and other financial data and maintains compliance regulations according to GAAP. Additionally, you are monitoring and preparing monthly budgets and ad hoc reports for all assigned federal, state, and local grants and programs. Furthermore, you are responsible for preparing journal entries, processing payroll and student refund checks. Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position. This position is primarily based out of our main campus office in Waterloo, IA; however, hybrid or fully remote work arrangements may be made available to exceptional candidates depending on their specific qualifications, certifications, and experience. Please note that regardless of primary work location, on-campus presence will be required during designated audit periods for a specified length of time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Business Administration or other related areas.
  • Two (2) years of experience with generally accepted accounting principles, budget administration and fiscal monitoring.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, budget administration, and fiscal monitoring.
  • Must have strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly to deadlines and handle a multitude of priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.

  • Experience with grant accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, monitors budgets, and makes recommendation for numerous grants. Grants may include: Workforce Development, IHUM, Early Children, Adult Literacy, Adult Basic Education, English Language Learners, etc.
  • Reviews, supports, and reconciles all assigned grants and programs in a timely manner.
  • Prepares spreadsheet and monitors allocation of Workforce Development employees’ time spent per grant.
  • Prepares and files claims, draws, and financial status reports for Federal, State, and Local grants.
  • Reviews financial statements with Grants Office and grant coordinators.
  • Completes quarterly and annual reporting for Federal, State, and Local grants.
  • Reconciles Fixed Assets monthly.
  • Prepares annual Fixed Asset report and closes the fiscal year in Colleague.
  • Exercises discretion in categorizing purchases as fixed assets.
  • Oversees property tax receipts and completes review and reporting for fiscal year end.
  • Prepares journal entries.
  • Processes payroll, accounts payable and student refund payments.
  • Prepares year-end work papers and reconciles to the General Ledger.
  • Works with auditors in supplying necessary materials and schedules for the annual audit.
  • Participates in campus committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
