About The Position

Under supervision, Accountant-Auditor I performs professional accounting work in maintaining and auditing accounts. Incumbents perform professional accounting or auditing duties requiring the application of generally accepted accounting principles. Assignments may involve independently maintaining a variety of accounts, or participation in the work of a unit engaged in collecting and recording financial information. Duties may include but are not limited to: preparing a variety of accounting reports; auditing and balancing ledgers; preparing financial reports for special assignments; performing detailed audits and examinations of records of commercial establishments for business license and room tax purposes; auditing agencies under agreements with City and commercial tenants of City property for compliance with terms of leases; performing internal cash and other audits as required; preparing written reports of audits with suggested changes or improvements when necessary; preparing accounting analyses; distributing revenues and expenses; preparing vouchers for general ledger entries; auditing daily cash sheets; providing a check and balance function for all City expenditures and verifying fund balances prior to their payment; maintaining accounting records; preparing trial balances and monthly and annual financial reports; maintaining City asset inventory control records; maintaining the City's self-funded Health and Welfare Trust and the Local 39 health plan; establishing monthly eligibility; preparing payment requests and disbursing payments; preparing reports regarding revenue and disbursement; processing City payroll in accordance with City resolutions, Fresno Municipal Code, and agreements with labor organizations; analyzing costs and preparing grant reimbursement invoices; assisting with budget preparation worksheets for grant funded projects; and preparing necessary adjustment and year-end reconciliation journals. Duties may vary by department. Accountant-Auditor I differs from Accountant-Auditor II in that the latter is the experienced level class in which incumbents perform the full range of accounting or auditing duties with a minimum of supervision. Incumbents may be required to work holidays and weekends per assigned department. Current vacancy exists in the Traffic Operations & Planning Division of the Department of Public Works, however, this class exists in multiple departments and the list generated from this recruitment will be used to fill future vacancies. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university which included twenty (20) semester units in accounting
  • Three (3) years of experience equivalent to that gained as an Accounting Technician with the City of Fresno. Equivalent experience may be defined as interpreting and processing financial data, records, and transactions, and resolving complex technical accounting problems.
  • A minimum of twenty (20) semester units in accounting from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants MUST ATTACH A COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS for education verification.
