The Accountant-Auditor role is unique to the Office of the Auditor-Controller and has a broad scope, encompassing county-wide financial activities. The primary mission of the Office of the Auditor-Controller is to ensure the fiscal integrity of the County's financial records and provide excellent service, assistance, and information to the public, Board of Supervisors, County Administrator's Office, County Departments and Employees, Special Districts, and some regional non-county agencies. This is an exciting time to become a part of Contra Costa County as we are currently accepting applications to fill three (3) Accountant-Auditor I vacancies within the General Accounting and Payroll division of the Auditor-Controller’s office. The established list may also be used to fill vacancies in other divisions within the Auditor-Controller’s office.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, finance, accounting or a closely related field. Course work must have included at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units from among the following accounting courses: Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Governmental Accounting, Fund Accounting, Cost Accounting, or Auditing; or Possession of a Certified Public Accountant certification, Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) certification, or the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification.
  • Four (4) years of full time (or its equivalent) experience as an Accounting or Payroll Technician for Contra Costa County and at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units from the above listed accounting/auditing courses, which must be transferrable to an accredited college or university system for credit, may be substituted for the required education.
  • Analyzing and Interpreting Data: Drawing meaning and conclusions from quantitative and qualitative data.

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles W-2 earnings and deductions
  • Calculates, reconciles, reports, and remits payroll deductions, withholding, and FICA taxes
  • Reconciles payroll general ledger accounts
  • Prepares, reviews, and approves payroll journals
  • Helps in W-2 and W-2C preparation
  • Assists in Federal and State payroll reporting
  • Documents work processes for assigned tasks
  • Prepares, reviews, and approves County department journals
  • Assists in preparing County Annual Comprehensive Financial Report
  • Reconciles general ledger
  • Participates in fiscal Year-End tasks and processes
  • Assists in preparing County Financial Transaction Report
  • Reviews, reconciles, analyzes, and maintains a variety of Trust Funds
  • Assists in processing School Districts, Special Districts, and Reclamation Districts' financial transactions in the County finance system
