About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire an Accountant Advanced. The successful candidate will, under the direction of the Accounting Unit Chief, perform complex accounting and review work. This role involves examining and analyzing appropriation balances and initiating fund transfers. The position also monitors account expenditures for designated line items and funds, and responds to inquiries and reconciles accounting problems for vendors and IDOT bureaus/districts.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with courses in business administration and accounting.
  • Requires two years of professional experience in accounting, external auditing, budgetary planning and control or public accounting.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least (1) year of experience working with accounts payables or processing payments to vendors.
  • Prefers at least (1) year of experience with state or non-state accounting procedures.
  • Prefers effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Prefers strong organizational skills.
  • Prefers at least (1) year of experience establishing and maintaining satisfactory working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Prefers at least (1) years of experience working with PC software applications especially Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Adobe Acrobat.

Responsibilities

  • Performs thorough reviews of invoices and applicable Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) files to determine accuracy, eligibility, and distribution of charges for proper claim.
  • Advises staff of the availability of funds.
  • Monitors obligations and project shortages/overages and takes corrective action.
  • Prepares correspondence to vendors and bureaus/districts.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
