BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide piano accompaniment for vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles in rehearsals and performances; rehearse with individual voice students.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and two years of experience accompanying choral groups, soloist/class performances and/or dance classes required.
  • Formal study of the piano at the college level may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Communicate effectively with students and faculty.
  • Provide piano accompaniment for vocal and instrumental individuals and ensembles.
  • Sight read music from any style period accurately and efficiently.
  • Sight read musical scores.
  • Follow the conductor or soloist.
  • Work cooperatively with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Sit for extended periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge Of: Piano performance and accompanist techniques; principles and practices of sight reading; oral communication skills; interpretation, phrasing and ornamentation appropriate to various musical styles; a wide variety of music styles, including chamber music and lieder (art song); proper accompaniment for voice classes and instrumental music.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany vocal and instrumental groups and soloists during classes and rehearsals.
  • Accompany musical groups and soloists at special events at the College.
  • Accompany soloists and choral groups at day and evening performances away from the College.
  • Accompany private lessons as needed.
  • Reinforce music instruction during rehearsals as directed by the instructor.
  • Assist with the supervision of students in small groups.
  • Make accompaniment tapes for student practices.
  • Maintain schedules of student rehearsals.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
