About The Position

This role involves opening and sorting gross anatomic specimens, verifying patient information, and accessioning/labeling specimens and requisitions. The clerk will utilize medical terminology for data entry into the Laboratory Information System, operate and maintain lab equipment including a cassette engraver, and manage tissue archive bins. Adherence to safety policies, handling of infectious biological specimens and chemicals, and maintaining computer application proficiency are key. The position also requires ensuring work area coverage, timely distribution of patient materials, protecting patient confidentiality, and maintaining competency through SOP updates and educational modules. Proper utilization of automated laboratory equipment and cross-training in other areas are also expected.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of prior job-related experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Open and sort Gross Anatomic specimens and verify patient information on requisition as well as specimen containers
  • Accession and label specimen requisition and container, ensuring correct labels are attached to both
  • Assimilate and apply medical terminology during data entry
  • Enter patient/specimen information into Laboratory Information System accurately
  • Operate and maintain cassette engraver
  • Clean and maintain all lab equipment as required
  • Sort, maintain, and dispose of tissue archive bins, including stacking and removing storage bins in tissue storage area
  • Adheres to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies
  • Handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely
  • Learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboard and other peripheral devices
  • Ensure work area has proper coverage at all times during the work shift, ie coverage for meal and/or rest periods
  • Ensure timely distribution of completed patient materials to assigned pathologists
  • Protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
  • Maintain competency through web-based Standard Operating Procedure updates as well as educational modules
  • Utilize automated laboratory equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers’ instructions
  • Cross train in other areas as assigned or requested
