About The Position

The Accessioner is responsible for proper handling and processing of incoming laboratory specimens including but not limited to verifying client and specimen details, ascertain adequacy and appropriateness of specimens. The Accessioner is also responsible in entering the orders in the laboratory information system, as well as ensuring specimens are labeled and stored, processed, and disposed of appropriately and efficiently. This is a Graveyard Shift; applicant must be able to work from 10pm-6am.

  • Familiarity with CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct activities in compliance with CLIA and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety practices, including but not limited to OSHA blood-borne pathogens, HIPAA, and hazardous chemicals training and monitoring.
  • Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions, and practices so that they may be corrected prior to an incident.
  • High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
  • Previous experience and a working knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook and demonstrated experience in accurate data entry.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in clinical laboratory or related work environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen receipt and accessioning functions.
  • Responsible for preparing, packaging, and coordinating all specimens requiring referral to external laboratories, ensuring accuracy, chain‑of‑custody integrity, and compliance with CLIA, CAP, and state regulations
  • Verify test requirements, completes all send‑out documentation, and communicates with reference labs, couriers, and internal departments to ensure timely processing.
  • Ensures that all specimens that are received are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure that there are no issues with patient identity and reporting.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the laboratory’s specimen acceptance and rejection criteria.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of all tests offered by the laboratory as well as all specimen requirement, collection, handling, transportation, and storage conditions.
  • Operates LIS system, follows standard procedures when entering data and corrects, edits, and/or verifies data entered in the LIS.
  • Performs accurate labeling, numbering, centrifuging, and preparing specimen aliquots.
  • Performs proper storage of specimens before & after testing including properly discarding specimens according to SOP and as instructed by the Lab Manager or Lab Supervisor.
  • Preparing specimens to be sent to a reference laboratory.
  • Documents and maintains accurate records of verbal communication with customers: physician’s offices, medical facilities, medical staff, and patients.
  • Assisting clients and phlebotomists with inquiries pertaining to specimens’ requirements and test turnaround times.
  • Documents and maintains accurate records of all communication with customers: physician’s offices, medical facilities, medical staff and patients.
  • Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory after completion of workday
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with the Laboratory Manager and/or laboratory staff
  • Complete other tasks as needed to support the objectives of the laboratory.
