About The Position

The Accessioning Technician is responsible for opening, identifying specimens, entering data into the Laboratory Information System, preparing specimens for testing, and transporting specimens to the correct department in the laboratory. This role requires a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, and the capacity to handle stress. The position may involve exposure to noise, dirt, dust, fumes, loud noises, and blood-borne pathogens. Emergent situations could extend working hours or require infrequent weekend work. The Accessioner will also be responsible for filing pathology slides and tissue blocks, maintaining organization of storage areas, keeping accurate chain of custody records, and performing daily environmental checks in the storage area.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree is required.
  • Minimum of one year experience.
  • Good understanding of laboratory information systems and automated laboratory equipment.
  • A critical thinker with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding analytical abilities.
  • Must be able to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work under stress and in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with resolving accessioning issues, including requisition discrepancies and missing information.
  • Receive specimens from multiple daily deliveries, auditing delivery and signing packages.
  • Accession patient specimens according to standard operating procedures and Quality Assurance standards.
  • Review, understand, and execute customer-specific requirements for order entry.
  • Accurately and efficiently data enter required patient and specimen information into the LIS system.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens for testing and label specimens accurately.
  • Maintain adequate departmental inventory.
  • Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations, company compliance policies and procedures, accrediting agency policies and procedures, and applicable healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse laws.
  • Work closely with the Client Services team to resolve and escalate incomplete or unclear order issues and promote good customer service.
  • File all pathology slides and tissue blocks daily in the designated storage system.
  • Maintain organization of slide and block storage areas at all times.
  • Keep accurate and documented chain of custody records for all specimens, slides, and blocks handled.
  • Perform and document daily humidity and temperature checks in the storage area to ensure proper environmental conditions.
