About The Position

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Accessible Formats Student Tech position for the Valley Library at Oregon State University (OSU). Valley Library is seeking a student to remediate Word and PDF documents for increased accessibility (primarily screen reader accessibility) for 10 to 15 hours/week, starting as soon as availability allows. Work schedule is during regular business hours (M-F, 8-5). This position will re-format archival and current publications to set standards, author alternative text for images, and correct transcriptions and PDF structures. No prior experience necessary, all training provided.

Requirements

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
• Basic knowledge of creating documents using a Word processor (Microsoft Word preferred)
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or comparable Google tools (Excel/Sheets, Word/Docs)
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to stay focused on tasks in an office environment
• Ability to follow precise instructions and ask clarifying questions as needed
• Effective communication skills

Responsibilities

• Learn how to use specialized software to correct Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and PDF structures (Technology).
• Use AI tools to create effective and unbiased alternative text descriptions for complex images and Microsoft Word to edit documents to attain accessible standards (Equity & Inclusion, Critical Thinking)
• Work with increased independence as you creatively resolve accessibility barriers in pdf documents (Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion)
• Learn advanced accessibility techniques for PDF remediation and complex graphics (Technology)
• Collaborate with OSULP employees on process improvements or additional projects (Teamwork)
