About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Director of Services to Students with Disabilities (SSD), the Accessibility Specialist provides professional disability-related services to enrolled students with disabilities at the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses. The position promotes equitable access to the educational experience through disability-related counseling and advising, case management, consultation, and collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to support an accessible and inclusive educational environment.

Requirements

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Responsibilities

Conducts the interactive process with CSUSB matriculated students with disabilities to assess disability-related functional limitations and determine and approve individualized accommodations through the exercise of independent professional judgment in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, CSU Executive Orders, coded memorandums, and University and departmental policies. Consults with the Disability Specialists' Team and/or the Director regarding accommodation determinations, accessibility concerns, and student support matters requiring additional review, consultation, or specialized expertise.
Prepares disability-related documentation and correspondence consistent with applicable privacy, confidentiality, and University requirements to communicate accommodation determinations and support disability-related service delivery.
Provides orientation and ongoing education regarding SSD services, accommodation processes, student rights and responsibilities, and the effective use of approved accommodations to promote informed decision-making and students' understanding of the disability-related accommodation process.
Provides ongoing disability-related counseling and advising by evaluating the effectiveness of approved accommodations, assessing evolving disability-related functional limitations and access needs, addressing disability-related concerns impacting equitable access, fostering student self-advocacy and informed decision-making, and recommending modifications to accommodation determinations, when appropriate.
Provides professional consultation to other SSD staff, faculty, campus departments, and external partners regarding disability-related accommodations, accessibility, and disability-related access barriers to support informed decision-making, facilitate equitable access, and promote the effective implementation of approved accommodations.
Provides disability-related implementation guidance regarding specialized accommodations and accessibility services to other SSD staff, faculty, campus departments, and external partners by communicating accommodation implementation requirements, accessibility considerations, and other information necessary to support the effective delivery of approved accommodations while maintaining applicable privacy and confidentiality requirements.
Identifies and facilitates appropriate referrals and resource connections to campus and community services based on students' disability-related needs and individual circumstances to support informed decision-making and access to services beyond the scope of SSD.
Manages an assigned moderately complex caseload by exercising professional judgment to monitor student engagement, maintain continuity of disability-related services, and ensure students receive appropriate support throughout their relationship with SSD.
Monitors and evaluates assigned caseload trends, accommodation utilization, demographics, and other relevant data to identify emerging student needs, support proactive case management, and inform service delivery and program improvements.
Provides proactive case management by conducting periodic outreach and follow-up with assigned students, evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of approved accommodations, addressing evolving disability-related access needs, maintaining accurate case records, and facilitating continuity of disability-related services.
Identifies students whose circumstances warrant additional review, outreach, intervention, or referral based on emerging concerns, changes in disability-related access needs, or direction from the SSD Director. Collaborates with appropriate campus partners, including the CARE Team when appropriate, to facilitate coordinated student support and intervention.
Provides voter registration services to students with disabilities in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and applicable State of California requirements.
Coordinates assigned accessibility services and accommodations to support equitable access and participation for students with disabilities. Collaborates with students, Disability Specialists, Accommodation Coordinators, faculty, campus departments, service providers, and external partners to facilitate the effective implementation of assigned accommodations.
Provides operational consultation and guidance regarding assigned accessibility services and accommodations by interpreting accommodation requirements, addressing implementation questions, resolving operational concerns, and promoting the consistent application of SSD policies and procedures.
Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of assigned accessibility services and accommodations by reviewing accommodation utilization, identifying implementation barriers, gathering stakeholder feedback, and recommending modifications or alternative implementation strategies, when appropriate.
Collaborates with Accommodation Coordinators, Disability Specialists, and other SSD staff to support coordinated accommodation delivery, operational continuity, cross-training, effective communication, and the overall effectiveness of SSD accessibility services.
Assists with the evaluation and continuous improvement of accessibility services, accommodation processes, operational workflows, and service delivery practices to enhance efficiency, consistency, and equitable access across SSD accommodation services.
Participates in the coordination of accessibility services and accommodations for university programs, events, and activities to promote equal access and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.
Provides disability-related employment guidance to prepare students to navigate employment through informed decision-making, workplace self-advocacy, disability disclosure, understanding employment rights and responsibilities, the process for requesting reasonable accommodations during the hiring process and employment, and strategies that support equitable access to employment opportunities.
Identifies students who may benefit from vocational rehabilitation and employment support services and facilitates appropriate referrals and resource connections based on students' disability-related needs, employment goals, and individual circumstances.
Maintains professional competency through ongoing professional development and training in applicable laws, ethical standards, emerging best practices, and principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and disability-informed practice. Applies this knowledge to deliver disability-related services ethically and equitably while recognizing the diverse identities, lived experiences, and access needs of students, exercising sound professional judgment, and protecting student privacy and confidentiality.
Contributes to departmental, divisional, and University initiatives by participating in committees, workgroups, special projects, outreach activities, and other classification-related assignments that support the mission and strategic goals of Services to Students with Disabilities, Student Affairs, and the University.
