About The Position

The Access Associate is responsible for assisting patrons in locating information within the library collection and answering factual questions using both print and electronic resources. This is a part-time position requiring 19 hours per week. The role involves direct patron interaction, managing library resources, and performing various clerical and public service duties. Essential Functions include answering information requests via phone and in person, recording all reference and material requests, assisting and instructing patrons on the use of library catalogs, reference sources, and the internet. The position also entails ordering interlibrary loan materials, tallying statistics, managing the vertical file, preparing bibliographies for both adult and children's sections, and assisting in material selection. Public presentations on various collections, shelving, shelf-reading, shifting collections, servicing machines, providing readers advisory, and giving building tours are also key responsibilities. The role requires knowledge of the English language, basic mathematics including the decimal system, public relations, and bibliographic research techniques. Employees must perform duties in a timely manner and be able to ascertain patron needs through effective interviewing and question negotiation. This includes listening with comprehension, analyzing and interpreting data, communicating clearly both orally and in writing, and comprehending written materials. The job requires being physically present at City facilities to perform essential functions. Additional requirements include the ability to use short-term and long-term memory, organize research steps, arrange items sequentially, plan and organize work, and interact positively with patrons and colleagues. Physical demands include standing and walking up to 6 hours daily, sitting for 2 hours daily, lifting up to 15 lbs, carrying up to 10 lbs, pushing carts up to 100 lbs, climbing stairs daily, and stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, and handling materials up to 6 hours daily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Over one (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License with a clear driving record.

Responsibilities
