About The Position

The National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy electron storage ring that produces extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research. The NSLS-II supports an international user community and performs its functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner. NSLS-II Beam Operations staff members are shift workers, providing 24/7 support. Operators are responsible for operating the NSLS-II with high reliability and within all safety guidelines. The NSLS-II Beam Operations group is seeking an Operator. This position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays, with shifts lasting 12 hours plus a 30-minute turnover. The role involves operating the NSLS-II facility 24/7 during user beam and accelerator studies, including troubleshooting, recovery, and accelerator start-up/shut-down. A smaller staff of Operators will remain on shift during extended shutdown periods. Overnight shifts will have two operators, one designated as Lead, responsible for safe operation, and the other providing support and responding to issues outside the control room. Day shifts will have one Operator assigned as Lead. The Operator will use Control System Studio (CSS) to control and monitor machine operations, learn to use, edit, and design machine-control pages, and assist in updating controls pages for future versions of CSS (Phoebus). The position includes shift differential pay.
