Accelerator Development Engineer

Argonne National Laboratory•Lemont, IL
•$57,764 - $93,600

About The Position

The Accelerator Development Group in Argonne’s Physics Division develops superconducting accelerator technology for ions and other applications. The group developed ATLAS, the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions. ATLAS is a U.S. Department of Energy National User Facility supporting research in nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics using stable and radioactive ion beams. The Accelerator Development Engineer joins a collaborative team contributing to advanced accelerator systems for ATLAS and other projects. The role involves hands-on development, engineering, design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of superconducting cavities and related subsystems; improvement and maintenance of laboratory equipment and technical subsystems; collaboration with staff operating and enhancing the ATLAS facility; and use of computer-based analytical, modeling, and design tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physics and 0+ years of experience, or equivalent.
  • Strong self-motivation and interest in a broad range of hands-on laboratory work, including tasks that may be physically demanding.
  • Creativity, sound problem-solving skills, and ability to address complex or novel technical challenges when established procedures may not be available.
  • Technical judgment based on foundational physics and engineering principles, with ability to diagnose issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, and deadline-driven technical environment.
  • Basic knowledge of and hands-on experience with vacuum systems, electronics, electrical systems, radio-frequency systems, and mechanical design.
  • Familiarity with modern mechanical engineering tools and computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Strong communication skills and interest in collaborating with colleagues to develop and refine technical ideas.
  • Excellent laboratory organization, safety awareness, and housekeeping practices.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Support concept development, engineering, design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of superconducting cavities and related subsystems for ATLAS and other accelerator projects.
  • Contribute to the development, fabrication, maintenance, and improvement of laboratory equipment and technical subsystems.
  • Collaborate with Accelerator Development Group and ATLAS staff to operate, maintain, and enhance the ATLAS accelerator facility.
  • Help deliver reliable, high-quality accelerator systems in support of current and future projects.
  • Use computer-based analytical, modeling, and design tools to advance accelerator development activities.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package; specific benefits are not listed in the posting.
