About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking an Academic Support Specialist for its Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) department. This role is crucial in supporting over 500 student-athletes in achieving their academic, athletic, and personal goals while navigating institutional, Mountain West Conference (MWC), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations. The position contributes to retention, progression, and completion (RPC) by enhancing academic support, which can improve Academic Progress Rate scores and graduation rates. Key responsibilities include coordinating and developing academic support programs such as the Textbook Scholarship Loan Program, Academic Awards/Honors Management, Event Planning, Academic Equipment/Supplies Loan Program, Study Center Management, and the SAAS Tutoring Program. The specialist will also assist SAAS leadership with learning strategies, academic data analysis, rules education, outreach presentations, recruit presentations, development and grant projects, website and tech management, and the SAAS learning specialist program. This position may involve hiring and supervising student workers, including recruiting, hiring, training, managing, monitoring, and timekeeping. As an athletic academic eligibility specialist, the role will involve academic certification of students, designing and implementing individualized academic skill development plans (reading, writing, time management, study habits, learning strategies), assisting with course selection and degree program declarations, and guiding the use of academic support resources. This is an in-person, on-site position that requires utilizing technology for student support services. Evening and weekend work, as well as occasional travel, may be required. All positions in Academic Affairs contribute to the university's core mission of increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success by addressing systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services, programs, and support. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • No years of experience required.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
  • Some experience within college student support services or a comparable professional field (does not have to be full-time experience).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • 1-3 years of experience.
  • Documented working knowledge of and the ability to understand and provide interpretation of NCAA, MWC, and institutional regulations relating to eligibility, financial aid, recruitment, and awards and benefits.
  • Working knowledge regarding institutional academic degree programs, student support services, and educational support programs.
  • Knowledge of FERPA.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems/software applications such as PeopleSoft, Canvas, Teamworks, Salesforce, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and database management.
  • Some experience with advising, teaching, tutoring, or peer mentoring (does not have to be full-time experience).
  • Preferred knowledge of HIPAA.
  • Working knowledge of UCA and UDA eligibility requirements.

  • Highly functional with regard to decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coordination of assigned student-athlete academic support programming.
  • Support student-athletes in achieving academic, athletic, and personal goals while navigating institutional, Mountain West Conference (MWC), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations.
  • Assist in retention, progression, and completion (RPC) efforts by increasing academic support.
  • Assist and/or coordinate and further develop academic support programs for SAAS, including but not limited to: Textbook Scholarship Loan Program, Academic Awards/Honors Management, Event Planning/Special Events, Academic Equipment/Supplies Loan Program, Study Center Management, and SAAS Tutoring Program.
  • Assist SAAS leadership with research/implementation/evaluation of learning strategies for student-athletes, academic data gathering and analysis, rules education and outreach presentations, faculty/staff appreciation, recruit presentations, development and grant projects, website and tech management, and the SAAS learning specialist program.
  • Hire and supervise student workers, including recruiting, hiring, training, managing, monitoring, and timekeeping.
  • Serve as an athletic academic eligibility specialist to an assigned student-athlete population, including academic certification of students.
  • Emphasize the design and implementation of specific, individualized plans for the development of academic skills, including reading and writing competencies, time management, enhanced study habits, and application of learning strategies.
  • Assist with course selection, declaration of degree programs, and necessary eligibility requirements.
  • Provide guidance and monitoring of the use of academic support resources for assigned student-athletes.
  • Utilize technology in day-to-day student support services.
