About The Position

The academic officer provides support to the students, faculty and support staff regarding the degree audit and defense request requirements, timing and the process for recording these milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree

  • FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
  • All candidates must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and maintain that valid work authorization throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in MA or MBA with 3 or more years of office experience
  • Experience in student services (counseling, advising, or similar)
  • Knowledge of/experience in LSU Policies and Procedures.
  • Familiarity with LSU Online systems and/or ease in learning new systems.
  • Experience with Workday strongly preferred.
  • Ideal candidates will have strong computer and communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic support and advising for graduate students, including non-matriculating students, graduate faculty and graduate support staff relevant to University policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates all enrolled student forms, withdrawals, and appeals.
  • Performs degree audits for masters and doctoral defenses.
  • Establishes and cultivates relationships with administrators and faculty to ensure accurate and timely communication of student needs and/or concerns.
  • Serves as a liaison to faculty and staff regarding academic planning, curriculum and career outcomes; routinely schedules and attends policy working meetings with programs and schools.
  • Proactively reaches out to, monitors, and assists current students who are on academic probation and warning, leave of absence, finance holds, conditional admission, deferred admission, as well as returning students to provide solutions to any academic barriers.
  • Collaborates with the University Registrar, Financial Aid, and faculty/staff to identify and assist at-risk students, linking them to appropriate advising, counseling, academic support and other resources.
  • Advises academically dismissed students on reinstatement processes.
  • Works in a team environment to promote student success through special programs, improved processes, and outreach campaigns.
  • Reviews student records for retention issues and monitors satisfactory academic progress.
  • Coaches students through administrative barriers that are preventing them from progressing towards their degrees.
  • Documents and tracks student issues; prepares periodic comments and notes on various student issues and exceptions.
  • Collaborates on new and existing initiatives, events, workshops and programs that promote student persistence, retention, and academic and career development learning.
  • Participates in new graduate student orientation, academic and professional development events, student life and engagement initiatives, and graduation.
  • Sustains an accurate, up-to-date body of knowledge about curricula across the institution and the current career landscape in the relevant fields.
  • Participates in cross-training to help cover other needs in the Graduate School.
  • Assists with special projects as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
