About The Position

The Academic Instructor Mentor (AIM) is responsible for training, assisting, and monitoring teachers new to the profession (1st year) and those new to Berkeley County Schools (2-3 years) across all grade levels. This role involves supporting novice teachers in various aspects of their assignments, including classroom management, instructional strategies, lesson planning, and professionalism. The AIM will also collaborate with administrators, organize staff development, and model professional behaviors. This position requires travel between schools.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to stand, talk, hear, walk and sit.
  • Ability to occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts.
  • Directly responsible for safety, well-being or work output of other people.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

Responsibilities

  • Train, assist, and monitor teachers new to teaching (TNT) and teachers new to Berkeley County schools (TNBC).
  • Assist, train, and observe TNT/TNBC with classroom management and instructional strategies.
  • Promote and model multi-sensory strategies, differentiated instruction, co-teaching, and other scientifically-based instruction.
  • Assist novice teachers in all aspects of their assignments, including professionalism, lesson planning, classroom management, delivery of instruction and assessment, parent conferences, providing accommodations, and writing IEPs.
  • Collaborate and communicate with teachers and school administrators regarding observations/visits, maintaining records, and other required paperwork.
  • Utilize technology programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Organize and deliver or assist with staff development sessions, including TNT/TNBC teacher orientation and follow-up curriculum sessions.
  • Model all aspects of professionalism, including employee confidentiality.
  • Build relationships with TNT/TNBC to establish trust, collaboration, and provide emotional support.
  • Participate in regular BCS mentoring/coaching meetings and assigned staff development sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
