About The Position

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an Academic Gastrointestinal/Liver Pathologist. This position is available on a tenure-track, tenured, fixed-term, or variable track at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The department is subspecialized in surgical pathology, and preference will be given to candidates with fellowship training and/or expertise in GI/Liver Pathology. Candidates willing to provide additional coverage in Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, Cytopathology, and/or other Surgical Pathology Sub-specialty areas are encouraged to apply. The role requires participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards and effective communication with an active clinical care team providing statewide integrated care. UNC offers numerous opportunities for collaboration with basic, translational, and clinical researchers, supported by institutions like the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, a Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence, an NCI-funded SPORE in Pancreatic Cancer, an NIH-funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD), the Center for Esophageal Diseases & Swallowing (CEDAS), and robust abdominal transplant and GI oncology programs. Teaching responsibilities include clinical residents and fellows, as well as students in the School of Medicine, Graduate School, and Undergraduate School.

Requirements

  • MD or equivalent degree.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology.
  • Eligible for North Carolina medical license.
  • Ability to participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Willingness to teach residents, fellows, and medical/graduate/undergraduate students.

Responsibilities

  • Sign-out of GI/Liver pathology cases.
  • Provide coverage in Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, Cytopathology, and/or other Surgical Pathology Sub-specialty areas (if willing).
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical care teams.
  • Engage in teaching clinical residents and fellows.
  • Participate in teaching in the School of Medicine, Graduate School, and Undergraduate School.
  • Collaborate with basic, translational, and clinical researchers.
