About The Position

The Academic Counselor is responsible for working with students to seamlessly onboard them into the university by evaluating and assessing TSI status and advising course placement. The position will be responsible for implementing evidence-based and student-centric programming through high-impact practices to promote success within our first and second-year student populations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
  • Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
  • Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Remains active in professional development.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an advising office counseling or advising students, and/or working with at-risk populations
  • Knowledgeable on Texas Success Initiative
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to details.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels students on TSI process, assessment, and requirements. This includes transcript evaluation of incoming students, advising of incoming and ongoing students, creation of education plans, and communication plan. Ensuring all TSI information is properly entered and tracked.
  • Creates and implements high-impact student success programs for first and second-year students that promote persistence, academic achievement, and timely degree completion.
  • Coordinates and administers student-centric programming for academically at-risk students including workshops and early grade reports.
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of orientation initiatives, including planning, communication, student outreach, and operational support to ensure a successful onboarding experience for new students.
  • Understands and stays informed on state laws and university policies applicable to programming responsibilities.
  • Support advising committee work and goals. Serve on advising committees, working group, projects.
